About Me...
Who am I?
I’m a mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend. I was just recently diagnosed (as an adult) as having ADHD which isn’t surprising since it’s genetic. I believe ADHD is a gift, I embrace it and I encourage my children to embrace their gifts as well.
My son has ADHD and he is a blast to be around. He’s a social butterfly! He’s an out-of-the-box thinker and problem solver. He has amazing people skills, can argue with the best defense attorney, has incredible intuition and can work a room like the most seasoned entertainer.
His personality and sense of humor draw people to him.
He loves to build, create, work with his hands and solve problems.
He’s creative and gets so focused on his projects that he tunes out everything and everyone.
However, he can’t sit still, gets in trouble in school, disrupts the class, is always distracted, stubborn and defiant and can literally make teachers retire.
He’s not “average” by our education system standards, but I know he’s going to change the world!
We live in Texas and love the outdoor life. Both my children love to be outside swimming, fishing, and exploring.
It sounds like an amazing life and for the most part it is. However, we have daily struggles with ADHD. My 17 year old struggles year after year in our education system. He’s different, learns differently, and thinks differently than the other students.
In spite of all this, he’s still confident, self adjusted, and really amazing to hang out with. He’s one of my favorite people. He struggles with organization, following instructions, neatness, loses everything, and he hates, I mean hates, to hear the word “No”. So I feel your pain, we struggle just like you every day.
We tried stimulant and non stimulant meds and nothing helped him, so we’ve learned to manage his ADHD through diet, exercise, educational accommodations, consistency, routine, and lots of love and encouragement.
